WGLN 2004 Pre-Symposium Workshops

Monday, October 25, 2004 • Times and Locations Vary - See Information Below

Welcome

Between 1998 and 2004, the Wallenberg Global Learning Network (WGLN) has fostered international collaboration amongst university communities in Sweden, at Stanford University, and in Germany, involving faculty committed to improving the teaching and learning process through the use of information and communication technology (ICT.) This coordinated and integrated program has been distinguished from other efforts to improve student learning by its goal of facilitating joint projects among faculty content experts (the faculty teaching university courses), technology experts (faculty and researchers developing new ICT for the advanced resource classrooms of the future), and faculty experts in the learning sciences studying how people learn and its implications for improving instructional strategies and creating more effective learning environments. WGLN’s mission has been to act as a catalyst in developing and supporting these faculty collaborations through a variety of innovative projects at the nexus of these interactions and across disciplinary fields of study. The primary goals of the WGLN are to help students achieve better learning outcomes, to support faculty investigators in producing new knowledge for best learning practices, and to develop pedagogic and technical solutions suitable for innovative use in a variety of university and school settings.

The 2004 Symposium and Pre-Symposium Workshops are the capstone event to a year of work by a wide variety of projects funded by the WGLN.

Pre-Symposium Workshops

Registration is open for six interactive workshops will be held in Stockholm and Uppsala the day before the symposium. Scroll to the bottom of this page to learn more about these hands-on events based upon the development findings of WGLN researchers.

Symposium Program

The symposium is designed around a concurrent session model, wherein two presentations will be made simultaneously within the program slots. Participants my choose from one of two presentations at any point during the day.

Program Note: The language of the symposium and workshops will predominantly be English.

Who Should Attend?

The program is designed to provide practical information on the use of ICT in education for any individual from medicine, engineering, natural sciences, and education. Participants can expect to learn more about the following topics:

  • Reflective tools to support student learning;
  • Online, remotely controlled science laboratories;
  • Computer-based advanced resource classroom interaction software and technology-augmented learning spaces;
  • Simulations of virtual patients for medical education
  • Wireless computing standards;
  • A worldwide exchange network for educational resources;
  • Web-based prescription tools for medical students and health professionals;
  • 3D visualization and simulation techniques that can be applied across disciplines

In this symposium, WGLN projects teams will report on their efforts to develop, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of:

  • Newly develop computerized learning technology for training the working memory of young children attending primary schools in the U.S. and Sweden;
  • Remotely controlled, university level laboratories in the physical sciences and engineering in the U.S., Sweden, and Germany;
  • Educational robotics toolboxes, robotics curricula, and problem-based learning in university level robotics courses in Germany, Sweden, and the U.S.;
  • Collaborative learning in four university courses in Germany and Sweden using the semantic web and its enhanced links to educational resources for teachers and students;
  • 3D Simulation-based team training for crisis management in emergency room medicine in the U.S. and Sweden;
  • A virtual labs learning library of interactive science content designed for cross- disciplinary programs, and for courses in medical genetics, immunology, and pharmacology in the U.S. and Sweden;
  • A web-activated case simulation of patients for medical education in the U.S. and in Sweden;
  • The use of wireless internet learning devices to improve pre-college mathematics education;
  • The use of wireless mobile learning devices to strengthen student participation in university courses, student access to educational resources, and to improve teaching practices;
  • Folio thinking instructional methods to enhance student learning in three mechatronic engineering courses in the U.S. and in Sweden;
  • High performance learning, collaboration, and performance environments – to improve teaching and learning in advanced resource facilities at Stanford and in Sweden; and
  • Deployments of new and improved technologies in advanced resource classrooms and facilities at Stanford and in Sweden that require less technical support and allow more widespread proliferation of these technology-augmented facilities across university schools and departments.
